About Me

Jenny1_closeWelcome to Oh! Eco Me!, my new blog dedicated to living life a bit greener, one itsy bitsy step at a time.

Who Am I?
I’m a single, working mom, a graphic designer, with my own biz. I’m a member of the baby boomer generation, although I think I was born in the last “official” year of that infamous generation. I live the typical suburban lifestyle. I own a fun 50′s rancher, have 2 kids (’bout grown) and a really old dog. I live each day by the seat of my pants. running amuck, trying to keep my life in tow. And its a great life. But, you know…here lately, I’ve been thinking there must be more… or less, as the case may be, to living this life.

Suddenly, smaller seemed cozier, less seemed more, and eating locally became an endeavor I wanted to pursue. My Dad taught me early on not to litter, to treat the earth well. But, it really ended there, as I grew up and went in hot pursuit of  what I thought was expected of me. This desire to live a more sustainable life began with my introduction to our local Slow Foods movement. After attending a Slow Foods dinner to benefit our local urban garden, I was hooked. My God, I actually grew a garden of my own. Now, I’m talking, I’m someone who couldn’t get a cactus to live. Every year I put pretty flowers in my planters on the walk out front, but by mid summer they are brown and crisp as fried okra. But, this summer, I have fresh tomatoes, squash, peas, cantaloupe… well, you get the idea.

And, that garden made me want to take it a step further. “It” being a more sustainable lifestyle.

Why a blog?
Well, why not? I figure there are others out there like me. I mean, I’m not Ed Begley, Jr., but I’d like to do my part as I can, to save old lady earth. And, sharing what I learn along the way might inspire someone else to come along for the ride, or maybe some of you will share some tips that will help me along my path.

My friends who know me, know that I tend to go off on tangents, wild spurts of energy punctuated with passionate glee. So, I hope you’ll join me as I jump off on this little sojourn… laughing and bumbling my way to being “eco” friendly. (I’m already tired of that term, it’s so overused, and there it is in my headline!) Whether or not I succeed at being a better friend to our earth, at least I’ll feel like I’m trying, and learning, and sharing along the way.

So, this blog is dedicated to those of us who want to be green (not in the greenwashed, marketed kind of way that you see on all the product packaging), but who truly want to live a little “greener’ life, but in teeny, tiny steps. After all, the small things really do matter. And being yellow-green is better than not being green at all. Right? I might not can change the fact that the polar ice caps are pooling up like bowls of melting vanilla bean ice cream. I might not can help much that the oceans are going to be fished out in a few years. But, I can certainly put one less plastic bag in the landfill.

So, I hope you’ll follow along as I explore ways to step up my “green-i-ness” everyday. I’m sure to fall off of the wagon from time to time, but, hopefully it’ll be great fun to take those first baby steps towards living, and teaching our kids to live, a lifestyle that is more sustainable, more real, and ultimately more satisfying. I hope you’ll follow along and share your own tips, ideas and stories. Afterall, we all have one (a story that is)!

PS – this is the “small print”… all material on this site is strictly my opinion. Since I’m No Expert, just learning, please remember I am not endorsing any particular product or service. Just passin’ on ideas and stuff I find interesting. Oh yeah, I don’t mind if you share info you find here, but if you do, please credit this blog or link back. Thanks!

Thanks for tuning in!
